What is stigma and why is it harmful?
We’ve all seen stigma in action and, chances are, we’ve experienced it ourselves. So let’s talk about it.
Stigma is anything that stereotypes, places a pre-judgment, or label on a person, situation, or idea. There are many different kinds of stigma. At Change to Chill, we focus on reducing stigma around stress, anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, and other related mental health conditions as well as the steps people take to manage these conditions.
When people are stigmatized for things out of their control, it can cause shame and prevent them from seeking the help they need. The most effective way to reduce stigma is to normalize conversations around mental health and create a safe space for friends and family to talk about their experiences.
