Volunteering – why do it? Most of us do it because it makes us feel good. We feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment knowing we’re making a positive difference in our community and helping those who may need a little extra support.
Volunteering can connect us to others, teach us new skills and help us learn and grow as people. Here are five ways volunteering helps improve our mind, body, soul and spirit.
- Volunteering counteracts the effects of stress, anger and anxiety. Whether you’re working alongside people or pets, connection to others can help us build meaningful connections.
- Volunteering makes you happy. Research has shown the act of being helpful to others delivers immense pleasure. The more we give, the happier we feel.
- Volunteering provides a sense of purpose. Focusing your attention on a new activity helps alleviate stress and keeps you mentally stimulated.
- Volunteering helps you stay physically active. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not.
- Volunteering builds self-confidence. Volunteering is a great way to learn and practice new skills, providing a new perspective on your own goals.
